Science of the Surf
15 Apr 2016
'Science of the Surf’ is a fascinating presentation about how our beaches work and behave; from the journey of tiny little sand grains onto your favourite beach, to the massive swell that rolls in during big storms.
Do you know how to spot rip currents and how to get out of one? Do you know how waves form and break? Why is rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia?
Keep safe in the surf and understand your favourite beach better by learning how to “read” the conditions of the beach and surf.
Presenter Dr Rip (aka Dr Rob Brander) is a senior lecturer and surf scientist at the University of New South Wales.
This workshop is free and open to everyone of all ages, 10 and up.
'Science of the Surf’ will be at Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club (1 North Steyne, Manly) on Tuesday, 19 April 2016 from 7.00pm - 8.00pm.
To reserve your free place, see the Manly Council website.
Join in the Manly Rotary Fun Run
Guy Leech will be joining in the Manly Rotary Fun Run on 22 May.
Guy is raising money to put defibrillators on our Northern Beaches. He lost a paddling mate for want of a defibrillator on the beach.
Go to manlyfunrun.org and register now to run with him and his team, or just to run for fun.
The Fun Run course suits everyone. The two kilometre course is ‘wheel chair friendly’ and children can join in.
You can walk, run or jog two, five or even ten kilometres if you are really serious!
Through the Fun Run, Manly’s residents have over the years funded local projects like our Women’s Shelter, Bear Cottage, the new Pioneer Clubhouse, the Royal Far West Bus Stop project, Sailability, as well as lockers and showers for our homeless.
Join in again this year!
